Project: Human Values Based Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education

Overall project's goal: The aims is to support the implementation of the water and sanitation related Millennium Development Goals and targets (MDGs) in Asian cities, specifically promoting pro-poor governance, water demand management, increased attention to environmental sanitation, and income generation for the poor linked to water supply and sanitation, within the framework of the Water for Asian Cities (“WAC”) Program in Cambodia.
Project Objectives:

Enhance better understanding of HVWSHE in Cambodia.
- Develop training guidebooks for HVWSHE.
- Provide platform for exchanging domestic and international experience on HVWSHE.
- Enhance the capacity of teachers to conduct HVWSHE.
- Demonstrate HVWSHE to other schools through the pilot schools both in education approaches and water classroom.
- Establish cooperation with the Royal University of Phnom Penh to establish HVWSHE within the University’s Environmental department and to establish a pilot demonstration project on rainwater harvesting.
Main Activities:
A. HVWSHE in 10 schools in Phnom Penh
- Baseline survey, awareness, Curriculum Development and Capacity Building
- Develop selection criteria and pick ten schools, including one teacher’s training college.
- Conduct a baseline Survey on the perception of water, sanitation, hygiene targeting stu-dents, teachers, parents and community leaders, and Rapid Assessment of the needs
- Developing an implementation plan
- Organise an orientation / Sensitization workshop on Human Values based water sanitation and hygiene education
- Study Visit to Thailand by resource persons on 10 schools, MoE and other relevant stakeholders
- Conduct training of teachers on the new curriculum
- Establish Water classrooms in 2 districts in partnership with ADB project
- Develop IEC materials in HVWSHE
- Water and sanitation related investments in 10 pilot schools in consultation with UN-Habitat
B. HVWSHE interventions in Royal University of Phnom Penh

Introduce HVWSHE within the Royal University of Phnom Penh’s (RUPP) Environment Department
Pilot demonstration on water saving and purification models by students at RUPP and organize
- one workshop demonstrating the models
- Establish demonstration rainwater harvesting project within the university’s campus
- Produce Manuals for schools on rainwater harvesting
C. Monitoring and Evaluation

Annual Review Work-shops
- Target Areas and beneficiaries:
- Ten schools in Dangkor and Russey Keo districts of Phnom Penh.
- The project is targeting MoEYS’s Staffs who are involved in project implementa-tion: Pre-service teachers of Teacher Training College (TTC) in Phnom Penh; target schools especially target teachers and students; school surrounded communities in target areas; Project focal point instructors and students of the Environment Science Department of Royal University of Phnom Penh.
