Project: Adult Literacy Especially for Women and Early Childhood Education
Funded by: European Commission
Duration: January 2008 - August 2009
As part of the ECOSORN (Economic and Social Re-launch of Northwest Provinces in Cambodia) project funded by EC, CSCS has been awarded the Adult Literacy (especially for women) with Early Childhood Education project through competitive bid.
OVERALL OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE
The overall objective is to reduce poverty through increased household income, mainly through increased agricultural production. The project’s purpose is the economic and social develop-ment of the rural population in three north-west provinces of Cambodia specifically Siem Reap, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey.
The specific objectives of the adult literacy (especially for women) associated with early childhood education are to help enhance the economic and social development of communities:
- Increase villagers’ capacity to take part to local development thanks to a better literacy level.
- Improve the general well-being of the population (family planning and kindergarten).
TARGET GROUPS AND AREAS: Siem Reap, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey Provinces
The beneficiaries will be: women, especially women with young children but also other vulnerable persons (disabled persons, economically disadvantaged people, family breadwinners, etc.).
1,464 illiterate adults benefited from literacy classes and 739 children attended the pre-schools.
The 60 adult literacy classes and 30 pre-schools were selected among the targeted 14 districts, 40 communes and 90 villages of the 3 target provinces. The selection of the locations will take into account the following criteria: high illiteracy rates, availability of access to existing literacy classes.
Awareness campaigns on literacy were organized in 5 districts of SRP, 4 districts of BMC and 5 districts of BTB. A village with no literacy class per target district was selected to hold the campaign. Commune chiefs, all village chiefs, literacy and pre-school teachers, literacy students and community representatives of the district met to share among themselves responsibilities and tasks to promote the adult literacy class concept. A total of 1,901 participants (1,219 women) took part to the campaigns.
